We are so excited for the start of the new year! There have been so many fantastic changes to the classrooms and outside area. We cannot wait to see the children explore these! This year we have lots of exciting events and learning planned.

To start the year we will explore the events surrounding the Great Fire of London. Children will solve and participate in activities to discover for themselves more about this significant event. We will learn how to create timelines, reasons as to why the fire spread and understand fire safety. As the term moves on we will begin our first book Traction Man where children will turn everyday objects into superheroes! Through this we will explore the properties of materials and even begin to make our own Superhero designs! Within their writing children will begin to develop characters and a plot thinking about how to sequence events.

Daily we will have phonics lessons in both class and small groups. We will start the year revising phase 4 sounds, please continue to practise these at home or feel free to ask us about sounds or games. We will also begin Mathematics Mastery which will really deepen the children’s understanding. Our first area will be looking at numbers up to 10 including addition and subtraction. This will develop into numbers up to 20. Children will explore practically and solve problems through explanation and reasoning.

PE will take place on Monday and Tuesday with the focus on Football and Dance. Please can children ensure they have a labelled PE kit in and long hair tied back.

We would love to have as many parents as possible, volunteering in Year 1. If you would like to be a part of our Year 1 journey this year, please let us know.

I would really like to volunteer for year 1. Would really like some more information as to how much time, when and what you would want from the parents – how can we help!?
I work full time but want to see if I can move things around to help.

Thank you for your reply to our blog! You are more than welcome to volunteer as little or as much as possible – please pop in the office.
To give further support/advice around volunteering – we will create a blog to clarify how parents can register their interest. Kind regards, Miss Hately
